I was told you can only carry a certian amount around with you in public and I wanted to know if:

a) That was true
b) What the amount was
c) If true...why that was the law?

It is not illegal to carry large sums, but it will get taken away if the cops find it. They do it every day on the highway and at airports. They claim that it's drug money and you might never see it again.

b. carry any amount but why when you can carry Visa
c. The law of averages - someone will knock you down and take it so why chance it.

I believe your 'source' is confused. If you travel internationally, you must declare if you are carrying sufficiently large amounts of cash. Under US law, you can still carry more that that amount as long as you declare that you are. I believe the current amount is $10,000. The purpose of the law involves money laundering.

Not true. You may carry as much cash as you can. Witness Tom Arnold. He carried a brief case with over a mllion dollars in it into a jewelry store to buy Roseanne Barr a gift. He walked out when they were snotty to him (they didn't realize who they were dealing with).

Not true. You can carry as much as you want. I wouldn't advise it though.
