Used oil from a car CANNOT just be thrown away. That is a Federal offense and anyone who does it deserves to be put away for life for ruining the environment. Save the oil in containers available at any car parts store (from Auto Zone to Walmart) and then bring the oil to any place that recycles it (like Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc.). For a small fee, these stores will take the oil off your hands. These places take your oil to a recycling plant which cleans the oil so it can be re-used, etc., saving the environment. DO IT RIGHT!

Take it to a local auto parts store such as O'Reilly's, Autozone, NAPA etc. They usually have a place for disposing of old oil. A lot of places that work on cars, or sell parts, actually have heaters designed to use old oil and use it for heat. At any rate, you can usually dump it at one of the locations I mentioned.

Put it in sealed containers, like the empty oil jugs and take it to your local recycling point. If you do not know where one is, phone your local county or city office. To pour it on the ground or down a drain is illegal and not too smart. We all have to do our part to minimize pollution.

Take it to your local recycling center.
If you have a mechanic shop near by they may dispose of it for you in their waste oil tank, wouldn't hurt to ask.

Bring it to a collection place to be disposed of properly. Please don't contaminate the environment. Used motor oils can be filtered and used as fuel
