I bought this beginner's crochet kit. It comes with a book that teaches to crochet step by step. I followd all of the directions for knotting the slip loop, and then making the basic chain stitch, but I must be doing something worng, because so far I haven't made a single successful stitch. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong, or know of a website where I can watch a free video on how to crochet?

Good luck. I believe you can do it. You might check to see if there is a group in your area. Anyone that can sit with you while you learn.

Here are just a few websites.

If you're having trouble following the book, see if your local craft store offers classes. Michaels, Joanns, Hobby Lobby all offer classes. You can also see if their is a local chapter of Project Linus. They make blankets for children who are sick or injured and I'm sure they'd be willing to help someone learn. In addition, there are a few websites that offer very detailed instructions and even video for free. Search on crochet patterns and you should find some help. Good luck.

Is the stitch you are trying to make called a single crochet (sc) ? If so with the one loop on your hook, put hook through the top yarn of stitch that you are going to put stitch in, then put your yarn over the hook, and pull that through the 2 loops on hook. Stitch made then continue the same way if you are putting the same stitch for the whole row.

You can also check and see if you have a recreation center that has crochet classes

I've been crocheting for 20 years and the only way your going to learn is by example. My grandma taught me. I tried to look at a pattern book to follow something new, and I couldn't even understand it,lol.

I also learned from both my grandmothers, I find reading it from a book is very hard.
Good luck to you.
