According to a Commons report, approximately 80% of prisoners smoke, as opposed to about a quarter of the general population.

The question, as with crime, is this because of nature or nurture?

People say nicotine calms the nerves,perhaps the prison/criminal population is trying to de-stress from the worry of their crimes,just a theory.Also in this day & age perhaps its a sign of rebellion &/or being politicaly incorrect ,as is crime.Being socialy naughty.

IMO prisoners smoke because cigarettes are a "drug" and they help to relieve the stress of imprisonment and the boredom.
