I'm majoring in computer science (not completely geekified yet, just starting towards my degree), but I cannot figure this out. Every evening at precisely 7:48 PM, my laptop computer lets out around ten high-pitched beeps. They're not loud, but if you are near the computer you can hear them. This is regardless of what program I'm using at the time. In case it makes a difference, I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP. There is no error message or dialog box or anything that comes up when it begins to beep. It started about the last week or so. I started having problems with the internal network card at around the same time, could this have anything to do with it?
Why on God's green earth is my computer doing this? What does it mean? How do I get it to stop? It's not particularly bothersome, but just WEIRD!
Thanks for any advice.

Hi from another CS major :)

Do you possibly have anything in your task scheduler? check the "source" link. Did you set up anti-virus scans for that time, or windows updates, or anything else that could be automatic? Is anyone else you know doing anything at that time? Is the network you're on under mantinance then or backup? There are many things that could cause it.

If it rather is asserting Disk examine errors - then it rather is surprisingly in all probability that your difficult rigidity has developed a fault(!). It has the two corrupted or has developed a fault meaning it can't perform good. you should pull it aside all you desire, yet until eventually it rather is to substitute your difficult rigidity, the undertaking could desire to no longer restoration itself. in case you have information on the rigidity which you elect, including photographs, artwork records etc - your community computing gadget restore centre ought to have the flexibility that may assist you in recuperating that information. one among those restoration isn't consistently much less costly - and from time to time it rather is merely extra basic to bypass out and purchase a sparkling difficult rigidity and start up off over. As for the inconsistency of what your computing gadget does once you start up off it up - difficult rigidity faults may be slightly random in how a procedures it may load previously inflicting your computing gadget problems. it ought to no longer help in case you maintain turning your device on and rancid until eventually you have had the computing gadget appeared at with the help of an IT restore technician.

Silly question, but have you tried leaving the compute roff at that time to make sure it's coming from the computer?

Do you have a UPS device connected? If so, maybe the sound is coming from the UPS because something else on the power grid is powering up at that exact time.

Could there be something running in your scheduler?

Every day, at 7:48 PM, many ISPs reset their connected ports as a daily maintenance procedure. Therefore, your laptop may not receive a signal and so it beeps. If you are not accessing the internet via an application, it will not beep.

Do you have any software running in the background? Strange it would happen every day at a specific time - if it wasn't trying to run something.

Check Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Scheduled Tasks and see if there isn't something running in there.

There are options in the BIOS that allow for automatic boot-ups and switch offs at any given time. Check your set-up to see if this is turned on.
