Their faces are expressionless as they slink down the catwalk. Instead of relying on facial expressions, designers seem to pick models with odd facial features, like giant eyebrows or cheekbones so high the model appears to be squinting. I mean, designers might as well have a set of mannequins on a track. It would be less expensive, I'm sure, and the mannequins could be made as thin as the designers please.

Usually, this is because the casters would like the product to be remembered, therefore, if a model's face catches your eye, then you may look at the dress. You'll often hear people discussing ensembles after a fashion show, "Oh was that the Gucci dress that was on the model with the tiny forehead? I loved that dress, I may very well get it for my own wedding!" Basically, it is to create an identifiable trait that can be easily recognized and remembered by viewers.

As to the part about not smiling, it is an attempt to look sexy and intriguing. Usually, if you were to find a model sporting a family-friendly tennis skirt and a polo and throwing and catching a tennis ball, she will be smiling. But if you were to see a model walking around with an extremely low-cut dress that covers up what it needs to, and nothing more, or a bikini that uhmmm let's just say absolutely DOES NOT have enough material for what it costs, they won't be smiling. Youn may not notice from a distance, but they will have their lips plumped outward, and makeup to make their cheekbones stick out, and a look that basically says "let's get down and dirty." Obviously, this is some explicit content, that's made to keep their image in the minds of critics and potential buyers. Basically, modeling is alot of acting, and playing up what you're wearing.

There are some other reasons, but those are the two big ones I've learned. (I model on the side, just a bit, to keep money coming my way)

Hope this helped ya!

smiles distract form the clothing and it doesn't look as chic....some girls look ugly when they smile.

It's all about trends models used to smile alot more in the 90's ..it just whats in style right now. Besides if i saw a girl comming down the runway with a big eleborate floor length gown and she was smilling i would think it doesnt look very "chic"...smiles dont look edgy and they look to "pageanty"

i think its to make the whole thing look serious.. because most of the time what they are wearing, no one else would ever wear!! so to stop the crowd from laughing, the models put on a vicous look! :) thats my theory anyway. and also because they are too skinny to smile.
