I hear so many people yap about freedom of speech, and yes we should all hav freedom of speech, i agree.

but why do so many lambast people with rude names when they speak their own minds and tell them to shut up? seems to me that for far too many people, freedom of speech is fine as long as u agree with their opinnions.

Freedom of speech is our right, we can say what we want, when we want and not give a damn...........as long as we do it in our own homes and whisper it!

Good point.

Freedom of speech is in theory something we all believe in. In reality not even the government allows it. We create laws we are told are necessary for survival. But some of those laws were created to benefit only a few individuals, not the majority. Still we need to believe that our opinion counts. If you give up that thought then you either cease to exist or you become a sheep and follow. Responding to another's request that you not voice your opinion is important. I have found that its not so much disagreeing but how a person disagrees. I feel you have a right to your opinion. But I will disagree with you on a lower level and be conscious that you are allowed your view. As I have heard it said once, there are 3 sides to every discussion. Yours, Mine and the facts.

Of course. freedom of speech is being able to say with reserve what one feels about a certain subject, but it is null when that person raises the anger of those which are attacked, or feel they are being attacked. It is often abused and mistreated, and it needs to be regulated by laws because if there were no governing laws, people would be killing others by the hundreds daily like the wild wild west. Express yourself, but do not offend others. Seems hard to do. Sometimes its best to exercise the right to be quiet.

I do not believe we have, or indeed should have complete freedom of speech.

I do not believe that people have the right to abuse others, to tell malicious lies about others, to misinform others and then hide behind "It's my right to say what I think" defence.

If we seek these freedoms, we must use them responsibly.

We don't have freedom of speech all the time we have laws on hate crimes, libel, slander, defamation. No one is seriously suggesting we should remove these laws, are they?

The whole 'freedom of speech' thing only applies to them you see. Everyone else has to sit back and agree or at the very least SILENTLY disagree!

If it's freedom of speech you want then accept that it cuts both ways. You have freedom to say what you think and so have people who don't agree with what you say. Otherwise what you would have is freedom to dictate - not the same thing.

I never thought I would find myself agreeing with a classless slapper but I'm with you on this one. It is similar to Christians ( who have a fundamental belief in free will) trying to legislate conservative christian values into statutes and over-riding every one elses free will. Hypocrites is actually too nice a description.
