If you have a digital camera, you could start scrapbooking on the computer. They have software that you can use to make really neat pages and print them off.
You could also start a moms/grandmoms group. Getting together once a week with other ladies that are raising small children. There has to be other grandma's out there that are raising their grandkids. My husband was raised by his grandparents.

1. You could volunteer to read to kids at the local library (you could take him with you and share your love of reading with more than just him.
2. Or volunteer at your local Musium. Most have kids days and you could take him also. (my suggestions are sort of "pick one" I do not mean to imply you could or should do more than one.
3. Most areas now have pre-K or they called it headstart when my kids were growing up. Find out what your area offers and volunteer there a couple days a week. It will help you keep up with your child's developement stages and give you a chance to encourage other parents. Your grandson might get to go free as long as you volunteer and you both will get a lot of people time.
I am currently laid off from my job (for lack of work) and I really know what you are saying about having time on your hands. But with me it is more so I am not necessarily a "people person" but if I do not maintain a certain amount of connection with the masses I lose touch in too many ways.
And with only a 4 yr old to talk to you need people whether you know it or not. Surprise, surprise... your grandson needs others his age too!
It does not matter where you volunteer the rules will be similar. Even if you only start out volunteering two days a week for 4 hrs a day... The thing to remember is once you start a schedule you can always add a couple hours here and there but they will depend on your scheduled minimum. Pick hours that you will be comfortable with and a time limit (tell them you can volunteer for a period of 6 weeks at first then add to it if it seems to be working out) Good luck with whatever you choose. Your grandson is lucky to have someone who likes to do things, he will learn from you no matter what you choose.

Since your motor skills are not up to par, and I am not saying that in a mean way, how about printing out pictures for iron-on-transfers for t-shirts? You say you have a computer and a printer what you are lacking is the transfer paper. If you have a Walmart near you, the paper is not expensive. Your grandson can help pick out the pictures with you and I'm sure he would enjoy it just as much as you would.

See if you local parks and recreation or YMCA has any type of activities. I am 45 and joined an exercise class which cost me only $5.00 but if money is to tight for even that.you could start a small daycare since you are already watching a 4year old it would give him playmates and help you earn money also.

here's an unusual idea for a hobby, bird watching.
Your grandosn will love it, you dont have to really go anywhere and the views are great.
Depending on where you live, find which birds are native to your area, build a habitat in your backyard and watch 'em flock in.
You could get really tricky and take pictures right out your window

Geocaching is lots of fun, if you like to explore. All you need is a GPS unit, (you can get as low as $80-90 new) and a sense of adventure. It's a treasure hunt/scavenger hunt/puzzle/game. Check out www.geocaching.com to learn about it.

You can try decoupage. It's not expensive, it's lovely and shaking hands shouldn't be the problem. Also, your grandson could help you, so you can both enjoy.
Good link for start:http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/decoupage/a/012201a.html
Beside that, maybe origami or flower decorating?

well you can type so you can blog...
Also you could excercise, learn how to make new foods, keep a diary, write a story... or you could make up songs...
Also you could do arts and crafts with your grandson. You can look on some sites for really easy and cheap activities. (like you can make some home-made play-doh)
or you could learn a new language! español? nihongo?
