My boyfriend wears a size L in the longsleeve GAP shirts. I want to buy him some more shirts like that, but not from GAP. But these other shirts don't come in S, M, or L, they come sized in numbers. What number would size L be?

A Large in a sport shirt would translate to anywhere from a 16 to 17 inch neck size, and a 34 to 35 sleeve length. Depends on the designer.
It may be best to take him with you and have him measured, or try some shirts on. If not, take some body measurements with a tape measure (chest and sleeve length for shirts--- on the Banana Republic and Gap sites they have instructions for doing this properly).
Once you have the proper measurements, check out the designer's size charts online before ordering. Every online site has them, and they are pretty accurate from the ones I have ordered from.

How big is his neck? The first number is the neck size. Large would probably be a 16 - 16.5 the second number is the arm length I wear a medium shirt which most the time translates to a 15 - 15.5 neck and 34/35 sleeve (if long sleeve) I have pretty long arms.

Impossible to say for sure. The numbers refer to sleeve length and neck circumference. A person who wears size L could have different length arms and different size neck.

16 1/2, or 17 should fit I am the same size.

In uk the size is stated in Inches " you could - verify in his wardroabe. degree his neck whilst he's dozing. OR purchase a shirt of nicely-known length 15" with the information on the shop they are going to replace it if it incredibly is the incorrect length.

it should be 16- 16 1/2 i personally wear L and xl is 17- 17 1/2
