Yes get a passport. And read carefully. You don't need a passport to get into Mexico, but you will need one to leave. And apply early, It takes about 6 weeks to get one, or you'll pay big for rush service.
The NAFTA countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico, although after an announcement on September 2, 2005[9] (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative), all persons entering the United States, including its own citizens, will be required to have a passport, even from Canada and Mexico, starting January 23, 2007 for air travel. On January 1, 2008, the passport requirement will also be extended to all sea and land border crossings.[10] The Canadian Government has responded to this by stating that soon United States citizens will be required to have a passport to enter Canada.[11] A passport is not generally required to enter Mexico. As of January 1, 2008 (January 23, 2007 for air travel), citizens of the United States will not need a passport to enter into Mexico, but will be required to show their passport when leaving Mexico and re-entering the United States. Citizens of Mexico, however, were never allowed to enter the United States without passports and visas, although since the start of NAFTA, Mexicans have had access to a special visa category that is solely for NAFTA countries (see TN visa).

You don't need one to get into Mexico, but you do need one to return the the United States. The Customs Service recently changed the rules and you now need a passport to return from Mexico and Canada. I would suggest you get your passport as soon as possible, they take between four and six weeks to process.

i believe you might be able to get into mexico with just a drivers license and copy of birth certificate, but if you'd like to reenter the US after your trip you're gonna need a passport. so, basically, yes.

Yes, and just a heads up because of the new laws on reentering the country it is taking longer for them to arrive, 2 months is about how long it's taking. If you need them sooner you can expedite them.

I BELIEVE TRAVELING TO MEXICO VIA A CRUISE SHIP FOR NOW DOES NOT REQUIRE THE NEED FOR A PASSPORT.
IF YOU ENTER AND RETURN FROM ANY FOREIGN COUNTRY AS OF THIS DATE REQUIRES THE NEED FOR A PASSPORT. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE A PASSPORT EVEN ON CRUISE SHIPS NEXT YEAR I BELIEVE

You need one to get back.
But when I went to Mexico we just walked through a huge gate.
Nobody said anything or stopped us.
