Well I just went through this past season teaching my (at the time) new girl friend my favorite sport. I think this is the best way, sitting down with someone who will be there to teach you the basics and answer all your questions. I would also like to reccomend a book to you (since you won't find much football on TV now). It's called "Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm Watching the Game!: A Woman's Guide to Loving Pro Football" by Holly Peete. Both my girlfriend and step-mom own copies of the book. Mrs. Pette is married to former NFL quaterback Rodney Peete and goes into a lot of depth in a very simplified manner. It's a great read!

To get started watching football is just pick a team your hometown team is usually the best because it's the easiest to connect with emotionally if you don't have a local team pick the team with the coolest uniform, best looking players, anything will do but just pay attention to one team when you watch your first game.Seeing you already know what the quarterback does your pretty much there because he is the most improtant player on the field. The second most is the running back (ex. Reggie Bush, O.J,Shaun Alexander, etc.) when the quarterback has the ball he usually hands it to him and he tries to run toward the endzone.Or he will try to pass it to a wide reciever ( Jerry Rice,Randy Moss,Terrel Owens) . Also remember they are not usually going toward the endzone they are trying to go ten yards. The only other offensive players you need to know about is the linemen they are the fat guys and there job is to protect the quarterback and make holes for the runningback to run through. To people who are big football fans and actually involved in football these players are the most important players on the field. However to casual fans they are just fat guys to stand around and are only noticed when the quarterback gets hurt.If you are watchng a game with someone who thinks you don't know much about the game this line will impress " Look at the size of that lineman" .It not only shows you are paying atention but that you know what a lineman does.Which will get you taken seriously. The only thing you really have to understand about Defense is that they are trying to take the ball away from the offense.Thats really all you need to know about football to watch and enjoy it. Good resources are at NFL.com they go into rules and porstions there. Also ESPN airs a show called NFL films there kind of like documentries of important games and legendary players. But the best way to learn is when football starts watch 1 or 2 games and it will all make sense.Watch and ENJOY

well i would say to learn about football the best way probably is trying to play it. Maybe that doesn't go well then maybe read about it study about it and i think going to a football game is also a great way. What you can also do is ask people that play football that you know about the tricks about football and what they are used for. I hope my answer can help if not just send an e-mail to 1237753@sbcglobal.net and i will apologize

Watching football games is a good start, but if you want a decent guide to football, pick up The Complete Idiot's Guide to Football. I read the whole thing twice before playing freshman year, it really helped me to understand how everything went on.

Go down to your local sports pub or any pub will do. Pick out a few drunken men and ask them about it or sit with them and watch a game. We seem to answer any stupid question and it's fun.
