Upgrading the RAM in any computer is one of the easiest things to do. It is also one of the cheapest things you can do to your computer to speed everything up. I recommend going to the Toshiba website, and researching how to access the RAM inside your computer. Then go to a reputable memory retailer (or use the Toshiba website) and look for the kind of RAM your computer requires. A few stats to keep in mind - Windows XP needs 256 MB of RAM (at a bare minimum) to run. 512 MB is recommended. For Windows Vista, you must have 512 MB to run (at barebones) and 1 GB to run effectively. I myself have 1 GB of RAM, and I am running Windows XP - and my computer literally flies through nearly any process.
Also, you need to be sure to follow all the rules of computer repair - be sure to ground yourself (by using a wrist strap, or at the least touching another metal object to disperse static electricity), and be sure to keep careful track of the screws that hold the cover in place - they can be hard to find if you loose one, especially if they're black.
Another thing to make sure of is that you are getting the right kind of RAM for your computer. There are so many different kinds of RAM (SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, RAMBUS) that it is very easy to get confused between the kinds. Most place will not allow you to exchange memory if it is you who made the error. So be careful with this.

Go to www.crucial.com and look on the right side of the window, about 1/2 way down. Click the "Scan my System" button and follow the instructions to let Crucial scan your computer. It will tell you exactly how much you have and what type, and also how much more you can add and, of course, the price. I only use Micron/Crucial memory.
As far as installing it, everyone's in agreement that it's fairly easy. Just find the right trap door on the underside of your laptop, use a small phillipshead screwdriver to open it, and insert the memory. There are typically 2 slots for memory in laptops. In some cases, though not too often, the trap door only exposes 1 slot, and the other is located on the top side of the motherboard, underneath the keyboard. This requires a bit more work, but still fairly straightforward. I'd say go for it.

I would go on-line and type in your model at the Toshiba site and find out how much ram your computer can upgrade to and what type of ram.
Typically, if you turn your computer up-side down, there is a slot there (typically it's screwed down). If you unscrew it, you'll see the memory slots. Again, it really depends on the age of your computer, model, etc.... so I'd go to the site. Should be a big deal to stick a card in a slot.

Very easy on the Toshibas, simply make sure its off, turn it over, remove the battery first. Then there is a ram compartment cap that needs to have a screw removed from. Remove that screw and you will see the sodimms. Either add another stick into it or remove the one you have and replace it with a bigger one. Remember its never good to mix brand names and different memory chip sizes, it may cause stability problems....good luck!
