overpopulation, polluted water, air, and food (and the things they are trying to pass off to us as food), television and mass media, the pressure to conform, ignorance, lack of connection to nature, a need for power and control, the oppression of people...we are all products of our environments.
it's enough to drive anyone crazy.

The freedoms that allowed in America (I assume that you are refering to the United States of) unfortunately tend to create an environment in which a small percentage of unstable individuals can thrive. On the other hand, if we have such a horrible country to live in, why do so many people risk their lives to come here? I have never ever heard of anyone searching for the "French Dream" or the "Chinese Dream", but there is an "American Dream". Despite all of our flaws, the United States of America and it's citizens are truly great. The diversity of race, religion, and political view can be found no where else on our planet. What happens to people that protest an unpopular war in China? Where can you have this many conflicting religions in one place without having ideological warfare? We are human beings, no better maybe than anyone else, but certainly no worse. Maybe if we instituted the death penalty as a Federal Law, or euthanized babies that were born with mental or physical handicaps our country would be better. I suppose if we legalized prostitution and pot smoking like much of Europe we'd be a better country. Ethnic cleansing like the Balkans and Africa, now that would make us a better, more tolerable nation. Dictatorship, that certainly would put Brittany Spears in her place. Government run media, there would be no more airing out of our own dirty laundry for the world to see, and then we wouldn't have any social problems, right? We should maybe get rid of search warrants and legal rights, that way we American Psychos could just be rounded up, shot, and put into unmarked graves. Get a clue. We have our faults, but there is no better place to live than the United States of America. The problem is that the bad people have that same opportunity. If you don't like us, then either don't come here, or ignore us, but don't make an unsupported irrational statement about the United States. Maybe we do live in a cesspool, but it is the best cesspool in the history of the world, and maybe wherever you are from has it's own problems. We are a spoiled, and irresponsible people quite often, that are transfixed by "American Idol" (a British import by the way), and Anna Nicole Smith's death. That doesn't make us a bad country. Our society allows us to have the choice to sit and read "War and Peace" or watch Dancing With the Stars. I've read "War and Peace" and I can tell you that Stacy Kiebler in a short skirt is waaaayyy more interesting. The US of A is the most generous, giving nation on the planet. Our Armed forces have freed more people than any nation in the history of the world, and we have come to our Allies' aid every time that we have been asked. Europe would have been overwhelmed twice in the last century if not for the United States. It was the American Dollar that then rebuilt both Germany and Japan after WWII, remember, they were the bad guys. It was the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe, not the Churchill or De Gaulle plans. In recent years, the US sent more economic and material aid to the tsunami ravaged areas of Asia and Africa than every other country combined. I'd venture a guess that you are not a fan of Israel so I won't even mention what we have done for them. I don't believe that our international track record is too bad. Don't talk to me about Iraq being only about oil either. Gas would be a nickle a gallon if that had been true. I could go on, but I don't believe that I will change your mind about this topic either way. Check out the good that this nation before you continue to hold it's faults against it and it's people.

one question to ask is how do we compare with other countries.I am not trying to be flippant, but maybe the answer lies in the human condition. I suffer from a mild form of mental illness. After years to trying to deal with my situation and believing I was the only one in my family that had this malady I discovered at a family reunion that many of my blood relatives have the same history. With so many people feeling this way maybe it is a genetic thing. For what purpose it serves I don't know. Genes are mutating all the time and perhaps somewhere along the line it became embedded in our gene pool. Look at Hitler and the German people in WW2, Idi Amin, the Japanese, now the Arabs and their bombings and Jihads, and probably many others I am unaware of, etc. So many questions ---so few definite answers.

Because 9 out of 10 people out there are constantly trying to get over on everybody and by the time I'm even half done watching my back, my mind done snapped in the process of having to keep myself from grabbing someone by the throat and wiping the pavement with their hide.
I blame the corporations for a large part of this sickness, but then corporations don't have a boss and are manned by... Well, it's a vicious, neverending cycle.
Best recommended course of action is patience, and tolerance.

More attention is paid to America, so the flaws are that much more obvious. If you pick up a newspaper anywhere in the Western world- there will be plenty of stories on something American-

because of their unhealthy culture. Having morals is frowned upon and whoever is a psycho or morally bankrupt gets all the attention...celebrities are a perfect example of this.
