I find it annoying when they blow bubbles with their gum as they take my order.

First of all, WOW! You should find it annoying.

1st: Extremely unprofessional. I would be embarassed to work alongside a waitress chewing gum, much less blowing bubbles while taking an order.

2nd: Hygiene. Chewing gum produces more saliva, and often causes the chewer to spit when talking.

So, my advice is... drum roll please....
request another server, one that isn't chewing gum. Be courteous, and if you have a polite server and good service, leave a good tip. If you have a large group, more than 15%. Groups are a lot of work!

And dont be worried that if you upset someone that they will do anything to your food. It doesn't happen. I have worked in many restaurants, including 3 McDonalds (transfers to train managers at one, and to do training at another) and I have NEVER seen anyone do anything to anyone's food. Promise.

I am a server and I chew gum (although I don't blow bubbles) to get into a rhythm. Chewing gum for me, especially when we are busy, keeps me going at a steady rhythm and eases stress.

Servers chew gum to keep their breath fresh and to handle the stress of being a server. You wouldn't believe how stressful the work is.

It's because stress.they barely have time to eat(like in my region) and try to give a substitute. They can also have a problem with there mouthbreath(stomach problems, long hours, stress, little time for personal hygiene) and chew bubblegum to cover that.Others just do it for the sake of doing so or because they've seen in movies actors beeing weiters and chewing bublegum.:D

It's a boring job that pays little.

Then the poor tippers! Popping gums makes the time go quicker. Ever stand on your feet for 8 hours?

Two choices.

Either the mgmt doesn't care, or...

The mgmt does care and the brats still chew gum.

You have no idea how hard it is to control the help.

Where do you eat? I've never had a server blowing bubbles at my table. Maybe you should dine in a nicer establishment.

because they are rude and dont want us to leave them a tip. i complain to the bosses as well. 99 percent of the restaurants i have worked at tell you they do not want you chewing gum on shift. so i think it is disrespectful

Maybe they want to keep their breath fresh when talking with customers.

As far as blowing bubbles, I don't know what kinda places you're eating at!
