It depends on the area. I wouldn't live there because there is nothing to do - it is a big bedroom community. If you have kids, it could be okay, thought.
You want to stay away form east side, which is anything East from 101 freeway.

It depends on which neighborhood. In my opinion, the ghetto parts of San Jose are:
TULLY RD.
WHITE RD.
KING RD.
QUIMBY RD.
STORY RD.
HELLYER AVE.
ALUM ROCK AVE.
MCKEE RD.
SENTER RD.
That covers most parts of the South Side. If you want to live in the good side of San Jose, go live on the North Side, in between North San Jose & Santa Clara. The neighborhood there is much better, it's quiet & it's NOT ghetto like South San Jose where the gang bangers hang out & the neighborhood is dirty. I've never known for Sunnyvale to be ghetto like South San Jose. Sunnyvale is usually a quiet town, much better than "South San Jose" that's for sure.

I think San Jose is a very nice city. It is developing a lot of new projects and new nice houses. But they are very expensive though.
