my car makes this sound only when i am stopped for a period of time, or when i just start my car. is it the fuel injector or is it the spark plugs. this sound is like idling, but it is heavy and offbeat.

Its probably the auto choke on the carburetor.

More info needed. Does it occur when cold, hot, is there a corresponding drop in the oil pressure gauge, or does the oil pressure indicator lamp flicker when the noise begins?
Injectors are very small parts, and emitt a very slight, high pitched clickinh noise. If they were at fault, you would notice a lack of performance in all engine speed ranges, especially during acceleration enrichment.

not enough info ! what is idling Heavy ??? U mean fast ? surging ? fast is several reasons surging is vacuum leak tighten down all screws and nuts on the carb & or manifold and all hoses to and from the carb

My vehicle did the same thing..u need to get it in for a tune up is what it sounds like..good luck
