Regardless if you use a router or a modem, and some are combined it does not matter unless you require wireless connections in the future. Then you need a wireless router and adapter. This can open you up to have more choices in placing your computer anywhere in the room without having to run cabling. As the world moves towards IP services like voice and video, you will eventually require a router or some other kind of CPE - Consumer Premise Equipment - to make use of these services like VOIP & IPTV. You will also be able to add more security on your connections with a router.

You'll only need a router if you have more than one computer you plan to hook up to the internet. Otherwise a modem will do it. Sometimes when you have cable internet installed, you get a modem/router combination. I'm not sure about with dsl.
