Can I melt down Ivory soap or similar to make gift soaps or do I need buy the glycerin soap?

Does it melt the same?

Unless you specifically want to mold it into a different shape, you don't have to do anything to it. Delta makes a product called Soap and Candle Medium that you can mix with paint and use on soaps and candles (of course:). If you go to Michaels.com, they have basic instructions on how to use it.
You can also try milling soap. It's been a while since I've looked at the process, but I believe you shred regular bar soap and press it into the mold. It takes longer to process, I think because it has to dry.
