First, we should reduce greenhouse gasses in general. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, but so is methane. The atmosphere is full of methane from animals that digest cellulite. Termiles and cows, primarily. Lord, we have an unnatural number of cows. Did you know that if you were on Mars, you could not see the light from human cities, but you could see the emission spectra of methane from all the cow burps.
Yes, we can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. We can also stop cutting down the trees in the rainforests, which is how carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere.
Finally, and this sounds silly but I talked to a physicist who showed me the numbers, we can paint more things white. The Sun doesn't heat the atmosphere. The Sun gives off mostly visible light, and the atmosphere is transparent to visible light. The Sun heats the ground, and the ground radiates infra-red. If we can get the ground to absorb less light, it will radiate less heat. Painting building roofs and roads and parking lots white will reduce the amount of light that the Earth abosrbs, and therefore the amount of heat that the Earth is returning to the atmosphere.

Stop burning coal and switch to recyclable nuclear energy, like the French did. Coal burning gives off many unknowns as well as carbon dioxide, including radioactive materials. Make pedestrian-friendly streets and outlaw cars and trucks-- we have the technology to travel by more efficient means. Invent a device to teleport humans.
