Ok. I have Dell computer DIM 2400 that I bought 2 yrs ago. Here lately, say in the last 8 months or so, I have noticed a MAJOR drop in disk space. it has gotten to the point where I keep getting the message "Low Disk Space" everytime I log onto the 'net. I have deleted just about every file I can think off without deleting anything major to the computer. But I keep getting the same message about disk space. IS there anything I can do short of taking it into CompUSA or something like that to get it totally fixed? It is becoming annoying. Thanks in advance. Oh yeah---I do have sypware files installed to detect viruses and stuff in case someone were to ask....

Ok thanks to those so far who have responded. A quick note: UNLESS the download is totally FREE, please do not direct me to a website where it scans but then I have to pay for the removal of the crap on my PC. If that was the case I would take it to a dealer. So if anyone knows of a site where I can download, use and remove this garbage on my PC for FREE, thenplease LMK. Thanks

Hi Paul,

If you dont know why you are low in disk space, then you need to find out what's taking up all the room. You can open your My Computer and view details. This will tell you how large your drive is, and how much actual free space there is. Remember, 1000MB = 1GB. You should only get the warning when you only have 5% available. So if you are seeing lots of free space, then you DO have a malware infection. Look below to see my recommendations on this.

If you dont have a lot of free space, double click your C drive and right-click your folders and select properties. You will see the size of each folder. Now your windows and program files folder could be 2-3GB each depending on what all is installed. Unless it is massively large (>10GB), leave them alone.

You probably have your My Documents folder as your largest. This SHOULD be where your data files are kept. Check the folder sizes until you find your culpret folder.

There is a shareware utility called Ace Utilities that has a disk catalog utility that will list your files in order of size of folder, type, and file. You can download the 30 day trial until you find the problem.

Good Luck!

Got to the start menu then pick programs then pick accessories then system tools and pick disk clean up.Then make sure that screen saver is off and then do the same thing then choose disk defragmenter. This helps the computer and needs to be done every now and then. But disk clean up should be done every week.Or every other day for an old computer. In disk clean up make sure that the boxes are checked. So they will be deleted.
