Half the week, I have nothing to do. When I tell my boss, she gives me only a five-minute job. I'm not allowed to play on the internet in my free time. When I'm busy, I have deadlines to meet, so I can't stretch out my work. To look busy, I shuffle papers around all day (but that gets old after a while and makes for a very long clock-watching day). This has been going on for three years. I haven't looked for another job because the pay and benefits are excellent. I'm stumped as to what to do about this situation?

You must be really bored, I know I would be. And this type of work can destroy your spirit eventually. Hope not! Think about this - what are you getting out of this place except from getting paid? How does it help you to develop and grow? I know that it's good to have stability, but I would advise you to start looking around and get job interviews. This place is not the only place with pay and benefits!

Both of those are good answers. I would also check with friends in other parts of the company to see if there are any projects you can help out on. Surely after 3 years with the company you know some people in other parts of the company that you can talk to about this. Perhaps you can get transferred to another part of the company where you can keep the good pay and benefits but also work in a position that better utilizes your abilities.

tell them. if u want more things to do, im sure they dont have a problem with that. dont tell them u r shuffling papers around, just tell them that u feel u r ready for more responsibility and longer jobs. let them know when u ask for something to do all u get is a 5 minute job and that u feel ur and their time could b going to something more effective. or keep asking ur boss for something to do. when u finish ur 5 minute job, ask for another job, then another...it will probably annoy her enough that she will give u something that takes longer just to keep u off her back.

Ask to be part of the safety, employee relations committee, or the company newspaper. It should give you something to do in your spare time.
