Because people are more empowered they seem to think they can interpret things as they see fit and believe they are right. For example people who think they are clever interpret the traffic laws as they see fit and drive like retards. If society didn't tell everyone that they were so special, stupid people would think more about their actions rather than assuming they are correct.

First, how detailed was your study into the history of human development that you know with certainty that intelligence is actually decreasing? IQ tests have been around for years, but with the constant change in our understanding of intelligence, it is hard to prove that people today are less intelligent than we were a hundred years ago. Even Plato whined about kids being less intelligent that earlier generations, but somehow the following generations were smart enough to harness the power of the atom and land on the moon.
Think of what kids can do that their grandparents find challenging: podcasting, myspace profiles, complex computer programs, creating grassroots campaigns, even my grandma has a hard time with the TV and microwave. Sure, people may be losing interest in domestic arts or penmanship, but that is because other interests like computer science and word processing are on the rise, not a drop in intelligence, but rather a drop in interest.
I think that technology just makes the stupid easier to notice, not just greater in number. A generation ago I would know just the idiots in my town or who made it on tv or into print; now I can see idiots all over the world. Some would say that parents are so busy working they don't encourage education as much as they used to. Others may point out that schools are pushing rote memorization for standardized tests and skipping critical thinking skills that are vital for higher cognitive thought but not measured on tests.

It's not really about people becoming stupid. It's about being feed up with society not living up to its responsibilities. It's about our society not living up to the standards of the past and not having priorities for it's communities. The importance of a quality education has gone by the way-side.
Instead it's --get everyone educated, but who cares at what level.--Instead of increasing the quality of the public education system, it has deceased. No tolerance, treat every child the same, expect every child to learn by the same methods, etc.
Everyone deserves a quality education regardless of financial means and learning style. Priority needs to be on quality education for everyone.
Instead of thinking of what we need to survive and live a productive, meaningful life, we have become a disposable society that goes after what it wants, no matter the cost.

I'm not stupid, but I think I understand you.
People are a product of their generation. Baby boomers have the advantage of being some of the most educated people in the world in conjunction with the gift of benefiting from the common sense and wisdom of their parents.
Their children, however, are more products of their environments. More entertainment choices combined with the neglect of their parents (the baby boomers) who for the most part thought they were doing the best they could by allowing their children to fend for themselves while growing up.
What do you think?

Its a matter of class...
The poor are less educated for the most part because of money.
Where as the rich can go to private schools and get the benefit from the best systems.
People live what they learn..
Its very hard to escape the class system anymore.
When the world was progressing from horse and buggy to cars and planes there was an opportunity for someone to work from ground up to make something of himself, now those opportunities have gone by the way side
Education should be NUMBER 1 in America but it seems to be at the bottom of the list.

I ask myself that question every day. I'm not claiming to be a genius but people do seem to be getting stupider. Or maybe it's not a case of stupidity but a case of lack of common sense. Scary!

I can think of two reasons right off the bat...People don't read anymore, and they think it's OK to ask us for the answers to their homework assignments and know that at least one person will give them an answer.
