What can I do to loosen up a bit? I'm very talkative but have trouble starting conversations. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. I'm very talkative and loud and stuff and i'm a good friend to people I know and am close to. The hard part is, I find it hard to let people get close to me. I'm afraid of awkwards silences too, so I don't like starting the conversation. Not many people bother to start the conversation so, that's my problem. Lol. I don't know what to do really.

I get it set into my mind, bound determined that I will talk to someone and then I open my mouth to say something and nothing comes out and I end up running away. Yeah, it sucks.

This is the advice I am going to give you, I've been giving it to myself for ages, I just hasn't worked yet.

1)Gather your nerves, if it's REALLY hard for you to start your conversations.
2) Smile, it makes it easier for you because the other person will feel your warm vibes and loosten up.
3)Cut the small talk. Maybe open up with a little, but after that stop the small talk. It's horribly boring for everyone and it is just a welcomer for awkwardness.
4)Say hi to someone new everyday. It will help you become more outgoing and stuff. It's like practise for the real conversations.

Good luck, hope I helped. If only i could get over this social bump.

Being a shy guy myself, I understand how frustrating this can be! But, the more I practiced, I found that the reason I had so much trouble starting conversations, was because I was worried about not knowing what to talk about, and coming off as boring... Here are two things to always remember... #1: Don't try to preplanned every word of your conversations, it will make you nervous and seem like you are trying to interview whoever your talking to and #2: Don't care about what people think! Most socially adjusted people can tell right away if someone doesn't want to be bothered, or is bored. You can start out by just making a casual observation about your surroundings to break the ice, then introduce yourself (if it is a stranger you're talking to,) and just ask a simple, non-personal question appropriate for the situation. More often then not, the conversation will take off from there, and eventually you will feel more relaxed!

here is how you start a conversation (i do this all the time and i can talk for hours):

"hi im [place your name here], whats your name?"

first introduce your self

then "do you wanna be friends?"

its ok to make new friends, that makes it easier to star conversations

finally "so, what do you do for fun?"

talk about fun with people!!!!

by the way, it works, trust me!!!

Sometimes, you just have to force yourself to talk to people. At times, I believe we all have difficulties doing that. But, it's worth it in the long, to just try. Take care, and best wishes. Good luck.

Find a loud-mouth friend. Eventually you'll start screaming at them to shut up. :D
