Have people today become disillusioned by the whole political correctness strategy and if so, why?
To what extent should society remain politically correct in their oral conduct?
(Hope it makes sense)

Amber - To an extent i understand your argument, but where do you draw the line? If we begin to call illegal immigrants 'illegal', since we've gone that far would we begin to condone calling a black illegal immigrant the 'n' word, or a pakistani illegal immigrant the 'p' word and so on? Personally i believe any sort of political incorrectness directed towards an 'alien' can be interpreted as racism.

Robert C - lol... i am not a racist! This question was not meant to stir any type of racial tension. I just felt a whole lot of hostility towards the issue, which was why i asked. I would have chosen your answer as the best if you hadn't called me a racist, hiding behind a left wing fascade.

I've been alive nearly half a century and believe me things used to be pretty bad. When I was a girl to be homosexual (which I'm not by the way) involved frequent trips to a hospital and the racism situation was a nightmare. Political correctness might seem like it goes too far but honestly, if you were on the receiving end of bigotry could it ever be far enough? We've come a long way but really there is still much to be done. Most people encounter prejudice every day even though mostly it is now a crime. Obviously legislation is not enough. This is where political correctness has a major role to play.

Much of the politically correct lingo is irrelevant. So I propose this.
We do a worldwide survey and ask everyone what words they find offencive and choose the most hated terms and ban these. That way we don't have to have political correctness overload for the sake of it.
There ya go, a world concept, shame I'm not in charge lol!!!
I think my initiative deserves 10 points!! :>)

Robert C. obviously completely misunderstood the question and took it totally out of context. Political correctness has been taken to the point of sheer absurdity and covers a huge spectrum of which racism is only a small part. Insufficient education, or just insufficient intelligence?

Well some people want to be political correct as a way of not offending anyone but no matter what someone is always going to be offended, you just can't make everyone happy. For example people now call illegals, illegal immigrants or illegal aliens. I guess so they don't offend illegals, I mean who cares about trying to be political correct they're illegals for goodness sakes.

People have forgotten what political correctness originally was...it meant being polite.
I hate British society. I detest that so many people feel free to be outwardly racist and think that their bullying is acceptable.
I laugh at these British twerps who laugh at Americans for being under educated when they are themselves as educated as cattle.
I have no respect for you asking this question in such a way as to hide your racism...you are what you are...you might at least have the common decency to admit what you are and not hide behind your liberal pretence.
If you mean 'Heil Hitler!'...say 'Heil Hitler!'....then you can really know what we think of you...and you don't need to hide any longer!!!...

This is why so many people have become disillusioned with political correctness. Some people who hate political correctness probably hold homophobic or racist views themselves and when they are told they are wrong for this, many of them become defensive about it.
As far as political correctness goes, it depends on what one is being politically correct about. As for as race goes, making racist comments is wrong no matter what. As a Christian, I believe political correctness should be about helping society go on the way Jesus would have it: love thy neighbor. Many people have forgotten that we should love our neighbor as ourself.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS WILL BE THE DOWNFALL OF AMERICA. If something looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, I will call it a duck. If something looks, like a N or P word, talks like an N or P word, and acts like an N or P word, I will call it an N or P word without hesitation, (especially the N words if they call themselves that).
Then people start crying, thats racist, or thats offensive, sorry it's the truth, you chose how to act not me.
Political correctness is just the wimpification of a society, SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND SAY IT MEAN.

Yeah, you got freedom of speech, but out of respect and courtesy you must still watch what you say.
