I also think it's outdated, because it seems borderline un-PC these days. But I do find myself saying things like, "Hello Pot! Hello, Kettle!" to people when they don't realize they're accusing each other of the same thing. They usually get it, and just laugh. You could modernize the saying though, by comparing anything that has the same use. 'Well isn't that the Blackberry calling the Razor a cell phone?!" etc...
