For most injuries they say to RICE it. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Heat is used later to relax the muscle after you get the swelling to go away.

Usually for an injury it is best to alternate. Cold will decrease swelling and heat will sooth and relax strained or pulled muscles and also will increase the blood flow that allows healing. Hope this helps you.

The primary problem with injuries is swelling therefore you would need a cold pack to decrease blood flow to the area which will reduce swelling.

If its a recent injury (within 24 hours) cold is best, After that heat is best.

actually both is the best, cold for 15 minutes then hot for 30 minutes. works great.

well when i had a injury.. related to sports i did both heals it FASTER. and i noe thats what you want =]
