irregular periods are normal, i'm almost 20 and mine still arent regular! birth control will make it regular if thats something you're interested in. even if it is a "hormonal imbalance", if all its effecting is your period dont sweat it, its no big deal.
As for "check ups" at the ob/gyn, dont worry about it. its a little uncomfortable, but if you tell them its your first time, they will let you know exactly what they're doing so its not so scary. if you want more details you can e-mail me and i'll tell you, its just probably not the best thing to write it all here ;-)

Hey well as everyone said there is an imbalance but it can easily be fix...I had the same thing so I went to see the doctor and told them. So they put me on birth control to help regulate things... I've been on the pill since '99 and I'm Twenty right now... The pill was my life saver because I helped keep my face clear of pimples, it minimized cramps and regulated my period... But just be careful because some girls gain weight fortunately I didn't. I've stopped the pill for one summer and thing went back to being irregular.. It is something that I have to stay on to keep regular but others just need the pill to get them flowing right and then they could stop and be regular...so just talk to your doctor..
PS I was a virgin when I started the pill.

It is normal to be "Irregular" When I started I got regular really fast but then all of a sudden I would skip weeks then months at a time. The doctor put me on hormones to get me regular again and that worked. So go to the doctor. Female check ups arent bad like they seem and are normally VERY HELPFUL. She or he can answer almost any question you have

It's not abnormal for young women to have irregular periods while they are still developing. However, it would still be a very good idea to see a gynecologist and get a check up: there's no point in taking risks, and your doctor will be able to answer any questions a lot better than bunch of strangers on the internet.
Don't be afraid to talk to your gyno; they're there to help you and they've heard it ALL before.
Here are some links that can tell you what to expect when you go for an exam:

sounds like its not really "regulated". how many times has it skipped a month in between? ive had irregular periods my whole life for no apparent reason (ive been to the gyn many times, even several times a year). being on the pill will make it regular. also checkups with the gyn are not scary. u just have to think of it as any other doctor. they want to make sure everything is normal..whether they are checking your throat and nose, or they are checking your vagina, its all just body parts to them. they will check your breasts for lumps. they will put their fingers inside for a second (with gloves on). they will feel around your lower abdomen. they may do a pap smear (but its not really needed if u are not sexually active). thats just when they swipe inside your cervix with a qtip really quickly.

Could be a hormone imbalance, endometriosis, polycystic ovary disease among other things.
You definitely would need to go to an OB/GYN. It would be a really good idea to see what's going on now instead of waiting...especially if you plan on having kids someday.
Surely not anything life threatening, but knowing and treating it would at least maybe stop you from wondering what it is.

You should go to the doctor...but it is probably nothing to worry about. I was every other month until my early twenties when I started getting my period at more like every 32 days. Diagnosis was that basically it took one of my ovaries a few extra years to "kick in."

I can't be specific but stress plays a role in you monthly cycles. It can make them late but I am not sure if it can cause you to outright skip months. You should see your doctor for a well woman exam to find out the exact cause
