Depends on what type of reporter. Local news and world news are totally different animals. My media studies classes (I went to a communications college) showed me how bias and pointless most local news stations are. Often times they will spend more time covering something about a local dog drowning than what is going on with the World Trade Organization or the UN. If you want to get into world politics, you have to deal with what is acceptable with the corporations that own the stations and their political affiliations.
That's a lot of garble, but if you can deal with all of this, and you still have something that you are dying to expose, then go for it. I think a good journalist can have one of the most meaningful jobs around, if they are honest. Otherwise you'll just be another hack with a high pay-roll but no credibility. And if you are shy, interviewing people may be a great reason to try and break out of it.
Check out Noam Chomsky's Documentary "Manufacturing Consent." Chomsky is an extremist and has a bunch of critics, but I think he says thing pretty straight. Instead of checking Fox News or the New York Times, trying checking out lesser circulated papers in the US like Khaleej Times for a different point of view. "Truth" is relative and can never be found from one source.
Hope that helped...

Go for it. You can overcome your shyness when it comes to a job. I am very shy but I found that in jobs I was able to do what I had to do to get over it because it was my job. Some people were very surprised when I became a home support person. I go into clients' homes (mostly elderly) and help them out with housework, cooking, bathing etc. It has helped me tremedously to overcome my shyness and I am proud of myself for taking this leap and doing something out of my normal comfort zone. Now I am completely at ease with this job.

Having a natural curiosity is a very good trait for a news reporter or journalism student to have. I think that once you get into your chosen field and you know it well and have a drive to do well at it, then your shyness will leave.
