In MS Word, a "hard return" uses character 13 (Chr(13) = Carriage Return." A "soft return" uses character 10 (Chr(10)).
In an actual "old school" typewriter, two actions actually occur when you hit the "return" bar: 1) the carriage is returned to the beginning of the line and 2) the roller roles one line and you get a "line feed" to roll down to the next line.
In Word, the "hard return" starts a new paragraph. The "soft return" starts a new line within the same paragraph so that you get the same paragraph formatting without any of the "space after" line spacing formatting.
