Has this happened to anyone else? I was just letting him sniff my hand and then he hissed at me. So, I started handing him food from my hands and now he lets me touch him but he'll jump and run after a couple of seconds. Is the hissing thing normal?

YES IT IS NORMAL, HE IS JUST GETTING TO KNOW YOU AND IS STILL SCARED, HE WILL WARM UP TO YOU SOON ENOUGH, JUST TAKE IT SLOW AND EASY WITH HIM FOR A FEW DAYS

your new little friend is just a bit scared at the moment at that is what the hissing sound is for. After a week or so, when he is settled in his new home it should stop. But you are doing the right thing by touching him and offering treats, he will soon realise that you wont harm him. I have had my hamster for a year now, and i left him alone for a few days before handeling him, and although he is extremly placid and laid back now he was also nervous to begin with and would try and jump off my hand. He now loves to come out and play. In another week or two when he relates your hand to treats and food you will be the best of friends!!

To be honest, I'm not an animal behavior expert, but I would imagine that if you were kept in a cage all day for hundreds of people to walk by and watch, then all of a sudden, you were carted off in a strange way for a trip to another place you have never seen, and somone just started picking you up, you might hiss too. My guess would be that, like any relationship, the one between you and your pet will take a little time to build. However, if you want a more knowledgeable answer, calll the place you purchased him from and ask them.

When i had a hamster he hissed at me. I it is normal because he was feeling frightened about being in a new place. That was how my hamster was. Give him time and he will get used 2 u and his new home. Good Luck!!!! =)

Yes, he probably felt threatened. You should leave him be for a day or two only put food in his bowl and water in his dispenser. Then after that start spending more time handing him food and treats then after a while he will warm up to you. My hammie was the same way. But now he is a sweet heart.
Good luck
PS mine loves carrots, you might wanna try that.

Sounds to be very normal for a scared little guy. Continue to hold him every day so he gets more used to you. You did great by offering the food to him, this shows his you are a friend and not there to hurt him. Also use a soft quiet toned voice when holding or just near him. We tend to talk to ours much like talking to a baby or young child. They respond so much better doing this.

Here's a link to a site that give tips on handling your hamster.

Don't worry about it too much. He is probably jsut ajusting to his new home. There are alot of new smells, sights, and people. After a few weeks he should like to touch you. Just make sure you touch him daily. I didn't touch my mouse much and then he wouldn't let me touch him. He kept biteing me because I never touched him :(. So as long as you touch him regularly then the hissing should stop.

He's afraid. New place, new people, none of his little hamster buddies. I have had hamsters for almost 20 years. It is normal. They eventually will get used to you. At least most of them will. Usually it just takes a little time. And, make sure that you wash your hands....you might have some type of smell that is disturbing him. Or you might smell of veggies and he will think it's food. Have fun. Make sure to take him out at least once a day and try to pet him, talk to him, give him a treat. My kids will usually take ours out and have them run through tunnels that they built, like an obstacle course. You can now hold ours for long periods of time and they are perfectly content, of course, they LOVE long hair..LOL. Have fun and remember their life span is so short, have lots of fun with them while they can:)

I want to add one more thing, you don't have to go buy hamster treats, you can give them lettuce, carrots, any type of raw veggies, and any nuts or seeds, just don't give them one's with salt, only fresh. You can get a salt wheel for him to nibble from the pet store.

He's probably very scared. This is a new place and you are a new person. Give him time. Let him come to you more than you try to push yourself on him. Get some extra yummy hamster treats and let him climb up on your hand to eat them, but don't try to pet him. Do that for awhile and then slowly start to try to pet him, but if he backs off, then let him be for awhile and then try it again.

He is just scared of you so be gentle and allow him to get used to you. Be careful though cause they can bite when they feel threatened. If you can show him that you are not going to harm him he will come to trust you in no time. Be sure to handle him every day though so he becomes more tame.
