I love that particular shape and style of Jag, but I'm afraid to pursue that passion for fear of wild and uncontrolled repairs and defects.
Is that justified though?
Just how bad are these cars?
I don't really need a car at all, I just use them to go shopping and to restaurants and on holidays every now and then. I live in southern New Zealand by the sea, a climate which, I suppose, should be just right for a car from England.
Should I go for it? What do you think?

Somewhere during the past, Ford bought Jag. Until then, the car was a real nightmare. Check with a local garage.

You could look into putting a different engine in it. I've seen 80's Jags for sale like that. Then you get a much more reliable engine and still a nice looking car. The electrical could still be a problem though. From what I've heard, electrical is the #1 issue on these.

I had an 85 XJ12 vandenplas it developed an electrical short we could not find. I own a shop and had to take it to the dealer who had it for 3 weeks. it was the dimmer switch. We had to negotiate the cost as I wasn't about to pay for 3 weeks labor for a turn signal. I sold it shortly thereafter. They are OK and a nice ride and I also like the looks but the unknown will bite you. This is why the price is probably so attractive as the resale of these is pitiful

The carburetors on the xj6 seemed to give many a lot of problems. The Jag is a fine car if the ignition and carburetors are functioning properly. In some cases parts are hard to find.Check with a car parts place for availability of parts before you purchase.

I love Jags, but 1980's models have mechanical and electrical issues. Their quality really improved in the 90's. But if you can get one for a good price and have a mechanic you can trust, ..... .no I would still get one 1994 or newer.

80's Jags remind me of a girl I used to date. They look great, but the substance and sustainability just are not there. Sadly, your concerns are fully justified. Keep looking.

If you have a passion for this car,,then go ahead and buy it,,,,all cars need repairs,,,some more than others,,,,if you own a fine automobile,,,you will end up with higher repair bills,,,,thats just a fact of life.
Indulge,,,enjoy,,,if you can afford it.
