As a rule, I'd say you cannot. But one idea you could try, is to list a "wanted" ad in your local newspaper(s) or on Craigslist http://www.craigslist.org (it's free to post on Craigslist). Some people probably have old laptop computers around, and would consider selling. Another possibility would be to look in a pawnshop.

On the other hand, most people probably think (incorrectly) that their computer is worth more than it is. With new notebooks currently selling for less than $500 in some cases, a used one should really not be very expensive. But again, you're dealing with people's irrationality and greed.

Another problem you might have is finding something reliable. You might have to request that the computer have a certain brief warranty (2 weeks), during which time you would test the computer carefully to see that everything works as it should.

Locating a used computer is not something you should do unless you are considerably familiar with computers, or know somebody who is who can help you.

Are you familiar with the OLPC? It's a project to supply $100 notebook computers to third-world schoolchildren. They haven't shipped any yet, but the prototypes are completed and they are under production. Within the year, I expect you'll find them on eBay, although at this time, the official word is that they won't be available for retail purchase. Some sites to check out for that are http://laptop.org/ and http://www.olpcnews.com/sales_talk/price/buying_a_olpc_laptop.html

There is a "green laptop" that was made available a couple of years ago. It was primarily intended to be a computer for use in third world countries. It didn't do a whole lot, but it also ran on good ol' human power.

Your best best is to up the ante. You can find a laptop that is good enough for what most people would want to do for around 600.

if you buy on eBay for under $100 you got a bit of junk.
the most reasonable laptop is about $300 to $350.
a good one is about $600.
with your question i'm guessing you don't need a full blown power house between $1200 and $5000

nicely Alienware has great **** yet fee way extra advantageous than it fairly is nicely worth. yet once you have $10,000 to toss around........they're kinda your circulate-to organisation once you have a daft funds and don't care in case you pay extra often than not for the Alienware brand and phone on the case. they are going to stuff in a number of (if no longer THE) terrific areas attainable for computing device gaming at the instant.
