One big cause is fibroids. These are non-cancerous growths in the uterus. They're made of muscle so they carry a lot of blood. It used to be they only way to get rid of fibroids was to get a hysterectomy, but new methods are being used so a woman can keep her uterus is the fibroids aren't too big or too many.
There are hormonal reasons too, but fibroids are the most common.

I think it has something to do with genetics. Also, when it's heavier it usually doesn't last as long
