I say gravel in general because it is easier to clean and maintain than sand over all and the piranha wouldn't beneift from the sand.

In an enclosed system such as a fresh water tank, the substrate is not as importnt as one may think. The majority of household tanks have a colored gravel wich is not native to any fish species that I know of. Since your fish no longer need to forage for food, the substrate they prefer is no longer the issue. They learn you will feed them and they learn this quickly. It is a matter of preference and vanity. Sand is not the best option for any tank that is not using a protein skimmer.

Sand makes cleaning your fresh water more difficult since fresh water and salt water fish waste is slightly different. You will find yourself removing more of your substrate than fish waste. If you feel you must have this black moon sand or cannot decide between the two, I have seen tanks with very creative combinations of both. Perhaps red gravel with a black X in the center. This would benefit you by not having to clean all sand.

I agree with Ken on this one. I have both and the fine sand is a tricky one to clean. You kind of have to Hover above the debris to suck it up. You will also still suck up the sand. If you are sucking up too much sand you can clean your sand from your waste water by using a small holed strainer. The sand will be allowed to pass while the debris is left behind. You can do this while running your vac. Just point the out flow over the strainer into your bucket. Dump the water from the dirty bucket and reclaim the sand.

Personally, if you don't like spending time cleaning your tank, go with the gravel.

sand is actually easier to clean because the poop sits on the top instead of going down deep, so you just need to siphon the top
