In any make up hall, there are banks and rows upon row of lipsticks, foundations, creams, and blusher. In hundreds of shades which to my eye are almost identical. Do you really select one for it's colour, or is it just random buying?

most girls know what colors look good on them by process of elimination. With this elimination a smaller group of products are available for trying. For instance, I have pale pink tones in my skin so a brown based lip color won't look good on me. Good question, I never have stopped to think about it. :)

There are rules for buying them. For example if you have small eyes, don't use dark eyeshadows and eyeliners. If you have light skin, pink blushers look best whereas on dark skin orange is best.
Also different colours can help if you have a weird feature on your face like small lips.

never just pick a foundation color cus it could be to dark and make u look like you are dirty or if it is to light you will end up lookin albino to pick the right shade rub some of the sample foundation on you wrist and the one that looks the closest to your color buy lipstick that is another story depends on your hair color and you skin tone and if you have light or dark lips

I just match up the hue that's the closest to my hue. And no, they aren't identical. Almost all the blushes are some shade of either pink of brown but they are all different hues.

Well for makeups, you don't need to buy anything because after all "god" has given you a beautiful face and you don't have to mess your own face with these silly makeups, just don't throw your money on makeups. Without makeups you would look much more beautiful. Take my words for it! Bye!

I do it very carefully and maticulously. :)
but really, for me, it begins as random buying and its kind of an expirement... you just have to see what looks good with you skin tone/face shapand needs (concealer etc) and then buy it again!
so, i will answer your question by saying: BOTH - starts random, and ends up a CHOICE.

its for the color definitely. ur def not gay cuz if u are gay u would say something like oh this is crimson red, this is brick, red, strawberry red, or whatever. but obviously since u think all the colors are the same, ur def not gay. thats a good thing!

anyway its the color.

Dude, it's a mix of both. You buy what looks good on you, and what catches your eye...
