Actually, it doesn't give you space or take it away.
What it does it move stuff around, so things that are used together are closer to each other, and data can be accessed faster.
If you have disk space problems, the Defragmenter is not going to help you. If your computer is running a bit slow, though, it might.

Hello BabyT. Before I answer your question, let me start it off another way alright? There are two things you should do on a regular basis to help your computer to work good. You should run Disk Cleanup located in System tool (under the accessories section on XP). It will see how much space you can free up prior to running it. Should you want it to perform it, then click okay and it's done. Following this up, you should click on Disk Defrag and click ANALYZE. It will tell you automatically whether you should or should NOT defrag your system. I would recommend that you only defrag should your pc says so. Defragging your system fixes all the cluttered and fragmented files on your system so it's better. Sometimes it can take a real long time, and it can take less time as well. Once it's running don't mess with it. Doing this and cleaning out your cache will help tremendously. Get CCleaner to clear out your cache effortlessly and it's free. Also be sure to have antivirus and antispyware on your system for checking. Also have your firewall up. When downloading files, be sure to run the antivirus before installing the program. Take care.

It neither gives nor takes away (to any measureable amount).
Windows just thows files onto the storage in whatever parts and pieces it wants to. Defrag simply reorganizes so the files are back together.
Does it help much? Nope. You can defrag once or twice a year if you want. Make sure to do a "Disk Cleanup" first (without compressing your disk).

Neither. - What the DEFRAG command does is COMPACT all the randomly "stationed" bits on the disk.
It "DEFRAGMENTS" the information so your computer will more quickly access the information.
It's all a matter of how the data is organized.

It will give you more by bunching things together on your hard drive.
But to run it you need a bit of space so it can move stuff around... (not sure how much)
