I was wondering if you can send letters to people about mystery auctions that you are doing and they send me money and I send them a letter saiding whether they win or not. Is that okay? That won't have the police at my doorstep or any thing right?

P.S. I'm not trying to sell anything on here.

No. You would open yourself up for fraud charges if you don't keep great records and give everyone their money back. You can have a mystery auction, people would let you know what they are willing to pay, then you contact the winner, the winner sends the money, you send the item.

I doubt that very many people would just send you money without knowing WHAT is being auctioned, and just figure you'll let them know if they win.

Sounds pretty sketchy, frankly, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if you ended up with police on your doorstep.

Check with your local post office if you send them by mail. But, it kind of sounds like a letter or offer that I'd throw away. Do they know you? If not, you could be considered a "spammer." Better to ask in person and contact by phone.
