I have a 1989 Saab 900 Turbo. My mechanic told me that my front shocks (original parts) are weak. Should I be concerned about this/are good shocks necessary?

yes the shocks are necessary. The shocks keep the tires on the ground over bumps and help the keep the car under control. also with weak shocks the tires will ware funny. The shocks are a safety idem.

Most of the time, shocks last longer than just about any other expendible component....

Factors will include (but are not limited to) excessive weight limit and driving conditions (bumpy roads).

If your tires are still wearing irregularly after an alignment, it's probably your suspensioin (shocks)

If you push up and down on the car and you hear a thump at the "lowest" point, or it continues to bounce on its own, or stays "down," then you need to replace the shocks.

If your car is over 15 yrs old (under normal driving conditions) it's time to look at the shocks.

If your car is over 20 years old, it's a classic!

they are a necessity in that they make the ride more comfortable and help keep the "energy stored in the spring with the range of suspension movement".
basically, the shocks absorb impact so your entire car doesn't have to and that's important in preventing excessive wear.

but on a 1989, i wouldn't be surprised if the shocks are worn. the car will still run on back shocks but when you start getting headaches from driving on bumpy roads, you know it is definitely time to change them.

Yes the shocks are a very important component, just as important as the doors or windshield. It is a 89 so they have served you well. Replace them now before it starts to cause other problems or worse yet loose control if you get in a nasty situation.

The shock absorbers are an important part of the cars suspension system.
If you have weak shocks,,,it can cause your steering to be affected.
also tire wear,,and component wear.

YES... those shocks keep your car on the road and in control....

shocks keep your car from rolling in a turn as well as the comfort factor...

allways consider new shocks...

Yeah. Bad shocks can ruin your tires ( which are not cheap) and they allow the car to bounce which can make you lose control also.
Shocks, tires, brakes. They kinda go hand in hand and work together.

i own a shop, and yes the are important to have, they make the car handle better and help reduce tire wear, and they also absorb a lot of vibration from the road, but yes the are pretty important to have good ones on,other wise you,ll hear a lot of road noises ,and feel a lot of small bumps that normally you wouldn't know was there, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Yes. Not only do they contribute to a less bouncy ride, good shocks give more miles on tires.
