My adopted son is 6 and he is learning new words at school. Quite often he will know it one minute and several minutes later he can't tell you what it is. I worry because we are having difficulties teaching him his abcs and counting. He can count up to 30, but doesn't recognize the numbers on the board. Do we need to do something more to help him? I wonder if he will need special ed? He is a very determined little boy and I would like to help him if I can. Could someone out there give me some information and suggestions?

The brain is very energy hungry. Without enough calories and nutrients the brains functions will definitely be effected. For children who are developing this can be particularly damaging both in the short term and long term. You haven't mentioned where malnutrition comes into play for this little boy but if it has been a concern it can very well be impacting his learning abilities. If his school has the personnel available perhaps they can help by doing some testing to see if everything is as it should be or if he could benefit from some extra help.

I worked for many years with Special Ed population kids, and the answer is yes.
Also, was your son exposed in utero to drugs and/or alcohol?
If he was, or you suspect so, take him into the Early Childhood Development Dept. of your Public Schools ASAP. They can do remediation activities with him to offset any delays in his development.
Call and they will make you an appointment to get your son assessed. If he has some developmental delays due to abuse, neglect, or exposure, the sooner you can start getting help for him, the more and better results you will get.
Blessings, you sound like a lovely Mom.
Good luck.
