Depends.

Is it chronic tardiness, or a once in a great while thing?

Are you talking about elementary students, junior high or high school?

If older than 10 the kids are the ones that should be punished for tardiness.

You also have to keep in mind that if the punishment is too strict, kids will just opt to not show up at all.

I used to work for a company that gave you "points" for missing work or being late. You got the same "point" rather you were two minutes late or took the whole day off. One morning we received 10 inches of snow and even though I left my house 2 hours early, I was 2 minutes late to work. I walked straight up to my boss and asked him if he was marking me down as late. He said yes, so I said "later" and went home. They later changed their policy.

So again, it depends.

What are they gonna do to me....take away my lunch time at work? Seriously, the child is responsible for getting to each class on time, and should be punished when tardiness is a habit (unless the student is getting to school late every day...but that is definitely a problem the parents are responsible for). The school needs to inform the parents if there is a problem, and it is the responsibility of the parents to correct the problem, too.

Yes and no. In some cases parents just don't give a crap so they don't discipline their kids for being tardy. In other cases both parents are both working and have to trust that their child is gonna do the right thing.

I do think it's a parents responsability to teach our children punctuality. Puntuality is an attitude towards others, shows disrespect for others socially. Usually if a parent is punctual then the child will learn that. Human beings assimulate behaviors, its like monkey see monkey do.

How would you go about punishing the parent exactly?
And I think its the students responsibility to be on time.

Parents should make sure their kids get to where ever they are supposed to be on time but it is the kids responsibility to listen and pay attention to their parents and to the clock.
