Jamal Lewis' performance has tapered off since his 2066yd season. Not to mention his lockup in jail. This year specifically he seemed only to be effective behind a FB. With to backs on the field it usually signals to the defense running play so, they pack the line. So insteead of paying a $5million roster bonus to a mediocre back watch for the Ravens to draft a RB in the with a pretty high pick.

I was moderately shocked when I seen this being a Ravens fan. Jamal hasnt been putting up the same numbers he did in the past. It just seems he doesnt have the ability to break tackle and accelerate like he used to. The ravens saved money which they could use to sign a new young guy from the draft or possibly make a trade.

They want to keep him, but they don't want to pay his current contract. Releasing a player into free agency allows a team to negotiate with the player the same as every other team. As long as Lewis wants to play with the Ravens and some other team doesn't offer him a lot more money than Baltimore can pay, they will sign him to a new contract and he will be back on the team. Chances are this is what will happen. It's a little risky, but business is business.

They want to re-sign him but pay him less money than they have in the past.
If the Ravens don't work out a new contract with Lewis, then the Ravens will draft a rb who will probably do well.

I guess they wanted to clear the cap and get a good back in the draft or in free agency. I don't know if Ahman Green is better than Lewis by that much to release him...

Lewis lost his chops after spending time in Club Fed for the cell phone drug deal thing...they can pick up a more reliable guy in FA or through the draft. I'm sure they were looking to dump him sooner, but the Union would have given them heat for cutting him after he got out of prison. JLew just doesn't run with passion anymore...what memorable runs did he have last year that made you go, "oh, snap!"
None...
