I want to know if any amateur scientists were recognized and rewarded for their discoveries. If not then, what other rewards did they received in their lifetimes?

I made some money teaching astronomy to a group of home schoolers last year. Not a lot, but some.

2 amateur astronomers discovered a comet and it got named after them - Comet Hale-Bopp. I'm very sure many other amateur scientists made discoveries and got credit for it - this is just one that came across my mind first.

amateur astronomers that discover comets get the comet named after them. if you find some brand new phenomenon you could get some credit, for the most part though you can only make a small bang with a comet or an excellent photo or something.

look at david levy, he has several comets named after him and one comet in particular made his name famous (shoemaker-levy 9 that ran into jupiter)
