Right now I have been lifting weights, running, and watching running back instructional videos. By the fall of 2008 I should be able to bench 375, squat 500, and run a 4.4 40-yar dash. Can I realistically make the team?

Do you play in high school? If you do, go out and prove it on Friday nights and then you will find out if you are good enough, son. If you can bench 375 and run a 4.4 then you can play for my FB team any day kid.

It's possible but you have to remember that many people that go through the "walk-on" tryouts are invited there by the coaching staff. So not only will you have the disadvantage of trying to make the team as a walk-on, you will also be an un-invited walk-on. The fact that you are "watching running back instructional videos" tells me that you have no experience playing the RB position or maybe not even playing football to begin with. That's another setback, and in your case I would suggest the better course of action would be to go to a junior college that has a football team, get experience and then transfer to Michigan. If you play well enough in the JC ranks there's a chance that you could be recruited by Michigan as well, although you'd have to be one of the top ranked JC RB's in the country of course. Now if you've already been accepted and the football thing is just something you want to try while you earn your degree then I wouldn't go the JC route and would just continue to go through the walk-on tryouts every year while taking advantage of the opportunity of obtaining a higher education.

I would say set your goals to play for Ohio State. If you don't make the team the first year, you might make the practice squad. If you get cut from the practice squad, then Michigan will probably take you.

Just kidding.

Look, just don't give up. Get tunnel vision, and at the end of that tunnel, just focus on your goal. Nothing else except school and football. Keep working out, send video tapes of your highlights, letters to the athletic department showing your interest, and don't give up.

First did you play in high school, because that would help you. Second I would walk-on to a junior college or a D-2 school for a year or 2, than try out for Michigan. All you have to do is WORK YOUR *** OFF!!! You will have to beat out All-American high school football players just to be on depth chart. There is a pretty good chance though.

if yo've never played organized football, no
if you have, maybe

it would also help if you told us what you can bench and squat NOW, not in 2008.

you can easily make a highschool team if you're still a junior, which will give you great practice, unless you play in a bad conference.

And SERIOUSLY give up the videos. they won't help. the only way to get better is to get out and play.

You might be able to make the team. However, coaches have no tape of ya, nothing to work with. Plus, you've never played organized football. Your best bet may be 3rd string, but considering that Mike Hart may or may not be there in 08, you've got your work cut out for you.
