This one would boil some gingerroot and add some honey to it, then drink it piping hot. This also helps restore a "lost voice."

Take a piece of gingerroot (it may seem pricey per pound, but you don't need much -- besides, have you priced colds medicines lately?) and slice it fairly thin. Place the slices in a saucepan and add water. The water should cover the gingerroot by a couple of inches. Bring it to a good boil over medium to high heat, then turn the heat down a bit and let it simmer about 15-20 minutes. When it's done, strain out the pieces of gingerroot and discard them. Drink a mug of this stuff (I also call it 'swampwater' because of its muddy appearance) nice and hot with some honey stirred in so it tastes better. Because honey is a good natural antibiotic, use honey -- not sugar -- to sweeten this concoction. Add a little cream or milk, if you like. That doesn't mar its effectiveness and does improve the taste.

The best thing over the counter is zinc oxide lozenges. You can find a product called "throat-eze" - a bit more pricey than your regular throat lozenge - but they work very well. Germ Defense and Cold MD also work very well. Don't forget the simple basics too - get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids - especially water and orange juice.

Mix a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gargle with it. The salt kills germs by dehydrating them. Also, for some reason it's soothing. Not too hot, though!

And yes, drinking a lot of fluids is supposed to make a difference.

depends on how much money I had.

little money: buy a cough medicine with 'dextromethorphan' in it - works wonders for coughs/throat issues - menthol helps too

some money: put a 12 ounce empty glass glass in the freezer - when time to go to sleep, pour the brandy (from the fridge or freezer) into the cold glass - down this and expect a good night of sleep and a much better throat feeling in the morning

more money: whiskey

I don't know about cures, but hot tea with lemon helps a lot. Actually I could go for some right now.

One method that has been proven to work is to let a zinc supplement dissolve in your mouth slowly. Another for the quick relief of the soreness is to let an antiseptic lozenge dissolve in your mouth.

My dad always had me garggle with salt water. I am not sure this will cure it but I know it should ease the pain. It always helped me, but it tasts really gross.
