I have a Dell laptop which cost me approx £900. I also purchased a three year extended warranty. After just over a year the battery would not charge up. This laptop sits on a table and is not lugged around yet Dell tried to tell me that it was user induced damage, the AC adapter port needed to be replaced, and with this the entire motherboard. At a cost to me of £400! The same day I received an offer in the post for new Dell laptops (admittedly inferior spec) for £249. I wrote to their head office and after numerous arguments they finally fixed it under the warranty. However I won't be buying Dell next time. Their after-sales service is abysmal.

I have recently bought a new PC, but my comment will equally apply to a laptop.
Dell only sell direct. If the PC or laptop fails, how easy is it to get parts and service? If they only sell direct, then one assumes that they only supply parts to their own engineers, and hence, they could have you well up a gum tree.
In the end, I spent and extra £200 and bought an Acer from a local supplier, who gave me a three year service warranty at no extra cost, with 24 hr on site response.

Pros: almost the best bang for the buck, i.e. the best price/performance ratio and they have some crazy sales (I usually use coupons that take up to 30-40% off the price)
Cons: Not very attractive design. They have kept the same general design for 2+ yrs now. Their support center can be a hassle sometimes,

depends on the model, its like saying what the advantages and disadvantages of a car. best advice, what are you looking to do with it? work, play or in-between, find a a hand full that you like and seek review form people who use them, its best to find the ones who USE them not just test them for 20mins or so.

Advantages = they are cheap
Disadvantages = everything else. They only last for a short time, my whole motherboard crashed after a little over a year of having it.
Do yourself a favor and get an HP, it is worth it in the long run.

Price, warranty, customer service and you can customize your laptop to your liking. I've had one for a few years now and it has never failed. I've upgraded certain components as well very easily.
