If you put the wrong type of alternator in or used the wrong size pulley the alternator might not be spinning fast enough at idle to work.

Like everybody else states, check the belts on condition, if OK, needs retighten. You are fortunately the battery light even comes on on a condition like this. My mom had an 88 Civic wagon with a 1.5L and twice when the alternator failed, battery light did not come on; only came on during bulb check.

i would check the belt first...maybe its time to replace or tighten it...

get the alternator rechecked...and check it while the car is running...it should be putting out between 14.0 and 14.6 volts at idle

check the battery connections to make sure there is not any corrosion and the cables are in good shape.......

good luck....
