Just a note, no, the movie's not anything like the Nintendo games.
It's real people for one thing and it has more to do with dinosaurs, actually and how, while some of us evolved from apes (monkeys), some evolved from dinosaurs. Then there's the whole de-evolutionise thing etc. making people into Goombas, at least, the people who came from dinosaurs, or reptiles, or cold-blooded creatures.
Anyway, it would be much appreciated if someone could answer this.

The super mario games came first. The movie did not come out untill 1993, While the first game came out for the Atari in the late 70's, then followed on the NES.

The game came first in the late 70's or early 80's in a primitive version called Donkey Kong. This was before video game consoles that hooked up to TV sets, so it had to be played in the arcades. The graphics were basically icons and were in black and white. The screens were fixed, that is, when the character reached the end of the screen, he/she could not move any further. The idea of the game was for Mario to save the princess from Donkey Kong, a gorilla. The game levels were series of levels of I-beams, and DK had the princess on the top level. He rolled oil barrels down at Mario, who had to jump over them and make his way up the levels to rescue the princess. As you moved up game levels, DK started throwing fireballs at Mario. Always, just as Mario got to the top level of I-beams, DK would grab the princess and escape.
