I read that in the early 1980's at the University of Western Ontario scientists seeded a gorilla ovum with human sperm and that the embryo developed for several weeks. Is this possible?

This is a taboo subject. No one wants to address it honestly. I don't know about gorillas as they are not quite as closely related to humans as chimpanzees and bonobos, but I highly suspect that a combination of chimp and human egg and sperm would produce a viable embryo and possibly a living but sterile hybrid.

Someone has surely tried this somewhere, but the results have been covered up.

Nah, something to do with chromosomes. There was a chimp called Oliver http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_(chimpanzee) who garnered a lot of attention at the time as people thought it was a possible missing link but it turned out to be false as he was just a chimp although he was apparantly a unique one....
