We are going on vacation the end of August, early Sept. We are looking for a quiet, remote, non-touristy place. We like to hike, antique, and fish. Probably in the lower 48 states. Can you give us ideas, advice, descriptions, what you did there, and why you liked it?

Cody Wyoming. Best of mother nature. Grand Tetons at your back door, and Yellowstone National Park just over the ridge. Lots of great fishing near Cody. It has one of the largest museums in the West, Remington Rigle exhibit and Early American Indian and then Buffalo Bill Cody exhibits all under one roof. The town is cool, lots of shops and stuff to see. But, the neat thing is, you can stay in a ranch type area so it's more rustic, or in a bed and breakfast, or rent a cabin at a nearby KOA either in Cody or in West Yellowstone. As a family, we've been camping around there twice, and we all love it!

Well, it's not in the south, but Nantucket Island is the best to me. A great place to fish, be alone, not as touristy after labor day place. The best New England antiques, and lots of bike paths around the entire island, that you could walk, hike or bike. And the beaches!

More remote than Martha's Vinyard and no chain stores on the entire island, there are wonderful little inns everywhere to stay and even lovely cottages you can rent. It's a jewel of an island.

I heart Nantucket ;-)

Western NC is a nice place (Cherokee, Murphy) but Charleston SC is quite nice (hot in August though). Have you considered British Columbia? It's beautiful! St Augustine Florida is so pretty too.
