No, people will not punish a man for the sins of prior generations. If that was the case, the Kennedys never would have become so politically powerful.

A lot of Americans are descendants from people in those days. There's a possibility that any white person who had relatives here at that time could have been slave owners.
It's extremely hard to find out, though, and unless there are actual records lying around from the late 1700's-early 1800's, I question the complete accuracy of this claim.

A person should not be held responsible for what ancestors did or didn't do. On one side of my family there were slave owners, and one of my ancestors gave the slaves their freedom. That ancestor was also said to be part of the underground that helped slaves get freedom. So what would that do to me, I had both sides covered.

Let me first state that I am NOT a fan of Obama. That said, what his ancestors did with slaves should NOT affect his candidacy unless he were to indicate support for their being slave owners.

How can a man be responsible for what his ancestors did? I'm sure if he could change the past he would - but he's stuck with it. If the skeletons in the family closet stopped people from running for government then just about everyone would be disqualified.

Nothing. It is Nothing.
When Bill Clinton was Attorney General & Governor of Arkansas, he despised blacks.
But in Washington, DC, he became the First Black President.

Some of our presidents actually had slaves. Many businesses deliberately hire illegal workers for less than they could own slaves.
I doubt he will promote slavery or the exploitation of the poor.

Why would what some ancestors did in the past, legally yet, affect a person today?
